No-Code Conf 2021: The most important Webflow updates in a nutshell

At this year’s No-Code Conf, Webflow announced some updates that will massively change the platform in the near future. In addition to the previous focus on the front-end, the range of functions of Webflow will be expanded in 2022 by several complex backend functionalities. In this article, you can find out which updates will play the biggest role and significantly change Webflow.

No-Code Conf 2021 brought together more than 17,18 people from over 2021 countries on November 18 and 000, 135 – including companies such as Adobe, Apple, Airtable, Google and many more. They talked about new Webflow updates and various no-code tools and what will be possible with them now and in the near future.

The entire No-Conf including all sessions can be viewed here free of charge.

In this article, we will limit ourselves to the updates of Webflow itself, which were presented at the No-Code Conf. The updates “Webflow Memberships” and “Webflow Logic” are particularly interesting.

The new Webflow updates at a glance

Webflow divides software development as a whole into three areas: UI, Data, and Logic. In the “UI” area, Webflow already provides an excellent tool with the designer to visually develop a wide variety of website layouts without restrictions.

In the “Data” area, Webflow previously offered a flexible CMS, which is now made even more performant and is intended to provide more functions for simultaneous work as a team within Webflow. In addition, Webflow also offers an e-commerce function for managing data and a new membership function for monetizable user accounts, which will be completed soon. “Logic” is a completely new addition to the Webflow ecosystem. This makes it possible to implement typical backend functions natively within Webflow. With Logic, complicated workflows based on specific events (e.g., submitting customer data via a contact form) can be created on the backend without having to write any code.

With “Logic” and “Memberships” it will be possible in the future to develop e.g. a simple version of Airbnb or course platforms such as Masterclass natively within Webflow without having to write code or use other tools or plugins for this. This enables companies that know how to use these functions to achieve massive cost savings for developers and at the same time makes it possible to develop complex functions of a website much faster and more efficiently.

Memberships

The new Memberships feature (german: Memberships) allows Webflow users to create user groups and release website content only for certain user groups. For example, the most common use of this feature in practice is an online course portal where members can view content such as videos or articles for a one-time or recurring monthly fee. A well-known example of such an online course portal: Masterclass.com

Data of registered users (e.g. email, password, etc.) can be managed in a database within Webflow. It is also possible to automatically send emails to reset passwords or confirm a new registration. As usual from Webflow, the pages for the login and registration of a new user can be designed completely freely and are not limited to templates or ready-made templates.

It is also possible to create different forms of subscriptions and one-time payments that can be managed and billed directly in Webflow. Complex subscription models with several subscription levels (e.g. bronze, silver and gold) and the corresponding activation of website content based on the user’s respective subscription model are also possible.

Webflow Memberships will be available to all Webflow users in 2022.

Logic

With Logic, Webflow users can create custom workflows based on actions and conditions that are individually defined by you. This means that as a result of an action on your website – e.g. submitting a form – not only one thing happens, but there can be hundreds of options that happen automatically afterwards based on the logic you set.

Three types of building blocks that you can use to create a workflow with Logic were introduced: TriggerConditional, and Action Block. A trigger block starts the workflow, with conditional blocks you can incorporate certain conditions or queries into the workflow and action blocks execute a specific action in the workflow (e.g. sending an email or creating a new collection item for the Webflow CMS).

You don’t need to write any code for this, Webflow automatically executes the logic for you, which you have previously created visually within Webflow.

From capturing leads, to updating and managing website content, to connecting with customers, Logic opens up a host of new website features that can be efficiently developed by Webflow users without having to write code. There are practically no limits to the possibilities.

Webflow Logic will be available to all Webflow users in 2022.

Further updates

In addition to the most significant updates (Memberships and Logic), many other updates were presented to make Webflow better:

  • Workspaces: Webflow Workspaces allows you to assign roles and permissions to Webflow users within a team. For example, users with limited rights cannot accidentally publish the website or change technical settings while they are only supposed to work on the texts.
  • Blending Mode: The blend mode allows you to determine how the colors of stacked elements blend into each other in the Webflow Designer. Basically, it’s the CSS property “mix-blend-mode” which is now available directly within Webflow, which saves a lot of time and makes it possible to use the function within Webflow without writing any code.
  • Backdrop Filter: Background filters can be used to create blur and color shift effects for the area behind an element (for example, we use this function for our navigation bar). The function is now directly accessible in Webflow, you no longer need custom code to implement it in Webflow.
  • Improved accessibility features: Webflow’s audit panel has been further improved and makes it as easy as possible for Webflow users to make the website as accessible as possible (e.g. by notifying the Webflow user directly if an image does not have alt text).
  • Better CMS performance: Loading a Webflow project is now up to 15 times faster, consumes 6 times less memory in the browser and requires 86 times less bandwidth when loading.

When will the updates be available to everyone?

Currently, Webflow Memberships and Webflow Logic are in a beta stage and are currently only available to select Webflow users, who are to put the new features to the test in practical use before the updates are made available to everyone. However, Webflow has announced that both Memberships and Logic will be unlocked for everyone in 2022. Memberships will probably be available to everyone much sooner than Logic.

Most of the other updates that have been introduced are already available to all Webflow users. Some have already been released and some are only available as betas.

Result

The No-Code Conf 2021 surprised many participants very positively. The announced Webflow updates and the quality with which they were presented were particularly popular with long-time Webflow users who have been wanting the features presented for years and were very pleased with how Webflow has developed in 2021.

In the near future, Webflow will continue to develop strongly thanks to powerful features such as Memberships and Logic, convincing even more people to use no-code tools such as Webflow to realize even complex and very individual website projects and apps.

How no-code tools like Webflow will develop in the medium term remains exciting. In any case, this year’s No-Code Conf indicates that the next few years will be very interesting for users of no-code software and their customers.
